ロンドン旧市街のフェン・コートにあるモニュメントは2008 年 9 月 4 日にデズモンド・チュチュ大司教によって除幕されました。
花崗岩の円柱がいくつも立っているアート。
円柱には Lemn Sissay による「The Gilt of Cain」という詩からの抜粋が刻まれていて、それらと向き合うように説教壇が位置しています。
このアートは、1807 年に大西洋奴隷貿易が廃止され、大英帝国全体で奴隷解放のプロセスが始まったことを記念してつくられました。
フェン コートには、元々セントガブリエルという教会が建っていましたが、1666年のロンドン大火で焼失した後建て直されることはなく、のち、St Mary Woolnoth, Lombard Street 教区に組み込まれました。
このセントメアリー教会でお説教をしていた ジョン・ニュートンという牧師は、奴隷商人から奴隷制度廃止論者に転身した人です。
彼がここの牧師さんだったのは、1780 年から 1807 年まで。
このアートは、円柱がサトウキビを表していて、奴隷として働かされた黒人が搾取された農場にも見立てられていますし、円柱のひとつひとつが奴隷で、競売にかけられた様子を思い起こすこともできます。

また、奴隷廃止を説教壇から訴えた教会の中の信者にも受け取ることができます。
つまり、すべての他の事柄と同じように、立場を変えると同じものが違って見える、とてもいい見本にもなっているのです。
このアートは、彫刻家のMichael Visocchi と、詩人 Lemn Sissay のコラボレーション。
詩というのは訳すのが難しい場合が多いです。内容の正確さにこだわるとリズムを失ってしまうことになりかねないし、バックグラウンドがわからないと、表面の意味だけでは感動を呼び起こすことは難しいです。
タイトルの「The Gilt of Cain」からして解説が必要。
カインというのは旧約聖書のカイン、アダムとイブの長男です。
弟であるアベルを殺した人類初の殺人者。
ギルトというのは金箔なのですが、そこから派生して「本物の金ではない＝見せかけの豪華さ」という意味もあります。
他にも意味があって、英国の国債も同じ単語、つまり利子をつけて返却しなくてはならないもの。
また、これは関係ないかもしれませんが若い雌豚という意味もあります。
そして、まったく同じ発音でスペルが違う単語の Guilt の意味は罪悪。
ということで訳はほぼ不可能、詩の中身も、シティの証券取引所ならではの単語と聖書の旧約聖書の物語を組み合わせているので、日本語に翻訳するとその巧みさが失われてしまうので原文のまま載せますね。

The roaring trade floor rises above crashing waves:
the traders buy ships, beneath the slaves.
Sway machete back, sway machete again
cut back the Sugar Rush, Cain.
The whipsaw it’s all and the whip saw it all
The rising market and the cargo fall
Who’ll enter “Jerusalem” make the margin call for Abel?
Who will kick over the stall and turn the table?
Cain gathers cane as gilt-gift to his land
But whose sword of truth shall not sleep in hand?
